I am going to talk about the Multi-XY control. It's a very neat function to manually control Moving Heads and other fixtures who use X/Y movement such as scanners. It is basically a touchpad on your tablet. The advantage of the Multi-XY is that you can use up to 5 simultanious controls by touching with 1-5 fingers. I will only use and show one. The small disadvantage is that Midi only has 127 numbers against DMX 254, so movement is not so fine.

Open your TouchOSC editor and select your appropriate workspace. Rightclick in the workspace and select Multi-XY.

A square will appear. This is your touch surface. You can resize it by dragging the sides or by changing the Width and Height on the left. I have resized the square to 300 by 300.

Now we need to configure the midi. Don't forget we need to have 2 midi numbers, one for X and one for Y. As i reserved 1-20 for Faders I will configure the Multi-XY with 21-22. In the Midi Tab select enable besides Value x 1 and put 21 in the number. Then drop down to Value y 1, select enable and put 22 in the number.

Now we have configured the control in the TouchOSC Editor and it is time to move the layout to the tablet. Don't forget to save the layout first. In the TouchOSC editor click the Sync button in the top. As sson as a popup appears with the steps how to sync you can go on.

Open TouchOSC on the tablet and tap layout. Tap Add from Editor. Fill in the computers IP address or tap the computer in the Found Hosts. Then tap download. Tap on the Layout in the Layout screen and tap Done.

If all has gone well you will see your created layout. In my case a screen with only the Multi-XY square.

Now we need to open FreeStyler and configure the midi. We do want to control FreeStyer after all eh? Well, configuring Midi we have done on the main page already, so go there if you have forgotten.

Look for the Pan 8bit Channel and the Tilt 8bit Channel. These are the controls for pan and tilt. Select them and click Learn. The main problem with learning the Multi-XY is that it is almost impossible to move only the X without moving the Y. So it is best to fill them in by hand. Click Learn again to get out of Learn Mode and click the field to bring up a configuration popup. Make sure all the values are correct. In doubt check the other midi values of for example the Faders. I have filled in note 21 and 22 for my Multi-XY

Hit the Save button. Of course now we need to check if the Multi-XY is working. So I will select my Moving Heads by clicking the moving heads button on the left. Open the sliders and open the output window. As you can see my default values are in the middle (127).

Now I will move the Multi-XY on the tablet and see if there is a change. The Multi-XY will looke like this when you touch it.

Look in the FreeStyler screen and see if there are values changing when you move your finger over the Multi-XY. Compare the following and the previous picture to see for yourself.

This concludes the tutorial about the Multi-XY control. Have fun with it!
