OSC commands
Hi Ladies and Gents,
Does anyone know if freestyler is able to respond to OSC commands aswell as Midi? Or if there is a way of converting OSC to midi?

Re: OSC commands
I did google it before my post but did not find anything I thought was relevant
Thanks though Mattotone I will have a read through the linked info.
EDIT - Ive had a read through and it looks like an interesting protocal. At the moment I dont thoink there is a way to use it with FS but I guess it could in the future. If there is a way then Im sure that someone will work out how to implement it!

Re: OSC commands
Hi guys,
Thanks for all the posts. You read my mind, it was the touch-osc software I was looking at
Customisable control surfaces on an iphone as a remote control for FS, would be pretty lovely and when the ipad is more available...
Looks pretty darn cool, but only supports osc. Have to look into the osc-midi conversion

Re: OSC commands
Hi matt,
Wow resurecting an old thread
Thanks for the great App which seems beautifully suited to freestyler.
I took a look at it over the last couple of weeks, but I dont think it really does what I need it to, which is provide direct access to the submasters, faders and playback controls so that you can control a live show.
Unless I am mistaken? Happy to be corrected as that would be ace.
I have been playing a bit more with touchOSC over the last couple of days and this is a great tool, particularly for creating custom surfaces.
I have been able to create a control surface with controls customised to my own style, with direct access to 15 submasters and their related speed controls, a matrix of push button overrides and also direct access to some specific channels (e.g. strobe control) all from one portable screen.
There is now a "Midi bridge" which is freely downloadable, which allows it to be used with freestyler very easily, assigning midi messages to each control. It also supports midi feedback, so the virtual faders, buttons, x-y pads etc will update live from freestyler. It's like a virtual, customisable BCF2000
This seems a really good solution, the only thing which would make it better would be if freestyler supported OSC directly, as I believe that it allows the transmission of text labels, so that for example the submaster faders could be overlaid with the current cue as next/previous are pressed.
I dont think that is going to happen any time soon though
At the moment I think I am stuck between the touchscreen interface, the ipad app and touchOSC, all of which have different benefits and disbenefits, but I think that touchOSC os the closest I have found to a full virtual control surface.
Check it out

Re: OSC commands
Oh and P.S. Raph if you ever did look at implementing OSC which seems to be the way lots of VJing and audio software is going (very forward thinking that would be of you too!) then look no further than resolume or grand VJ for a masterclass in how to handle setting up the mapping

Re: OSC commands
Seems osc has been discussed before, even by me!.
Now that midi has been implemented with it the osc bit is unimportant.
For anyone interested to know, there is a mac program that converts osc to midi but to date not one for windows. Anyway this only matters if you have a template for something that only contains osc instruction.

Re: OSC commands
Nice. I have the touch OSC app for my ipad. I was wondering if the was a way to control FS using it. Be good to setup Touch screen sliders and OR Buttons using it.
I currently use it to control Resolume.

Re: OSC commands
YES!
see this post = viewtopic.php?f=38&t=5193
and this = viewtopic.php?f=87&t=5182
Im using a more complex version of this template to run FS for shows. I works perfectly.
I also have a mini version on my iPhone. Both can be used at the same time.
So far Ive had 2 iPads and 2 iPhones all hooked up on the midi bridge to FS. Nothing went wrong!

I am a little stuck at setting up the midi Bridge to FS.
I assume that you would use a midi-ethernet convertor of some sort being the OSC from ipad and then the Midi Bridge to conver the OSC to Midi on the FS PC is that right?

Re: OSC commands
OK heres what you need to do... (from the begining, this is for anyone wanting to use this!)
Open TouchOSCeditor and create the page template as you want it. This can be really time consuming and I am always making changes to my layout. Or download the one I posted on another thread. Then edit each button, fader, encoder and assign each with a midi channel value. All you need to do is click on each one in turn and edit the info on the left side of the screen... You will notice that there is a choice of OSC or MIDI on a little tab. Ignor OSC and click ob the MIDI tab! The only bits you need to change are put a tick in the little box next to the 'x' and the 'NUMBER' for each button or fader etc.
var: X
Type: Control Change
Channel: 1
Number: (this is the variable from 0 to 127 and each bitton, fader needs a unique number)
Range: 0 127
Once you get more into this you might want / need to change some other other stuff but this will be enough for now!
Once you are done save it.
Make sure you have downloaded the TouchOSC bridge and that it is running on your PC. Your PC and iPad MUST MUST be connected to the SAME wifi network.
Now click on the SYNC button on th OSC editor. If you dont do this then you can't connect to your iPad!!!! You need to make sure that the OSC app on the iPad is set up correctly. the IP address of the Host PC MUST be correct.
Connections
OSC: 192.168.1.4 (example)
MIDI Bridge: 192.168.1.4 (example)
MIDI Mobilizer: Disabled
Core MIDI: Disabled
Layout
(Select this and another page will open, there will be some layouts already here but you will want to add your own that you just made, more on this in a bit...)
Options
(various option that you probably wont need but have a look if you like)
About
(The usual 'About'type info)
So the 'Layout' bit. Open this up and at the to you will see 'ADD'. Open this and all being well your iPad will scan the network and find your PC (This only works if you have clicked on 'SYNC' in touchosceditor, you have both devices on the same wifi network and the ip address are correct on the iPad. Once you see your PC on the list (sometimes it might appear twice but it will still work) open that and it will download the layout you just made.
Give yourself a big pat on the back, you little genius!
So now you can go into FS and edit the midi control to match the layout on the ipad.
Just remember that the TouchOSC bridge MUST stay running in order for the layout to communicate with FS.
Ive probably missed out some stuff but this SHOULD get the job done.
