Hi, new to Freestyler. just a quick dumb question ( for now) but what can i use from the PC to the fixture to run the software? Looking at http://www.freestylersupport.com/wiki/external_control can i simply use a usb to xlr into 1st fixture?

You'll need a USB DMX interface dongle for it to work and you to have control of your lights, but be sure not to get the cheap rubbish ones, as they don't tend to work properly and can cause issues.
I myself use this one https://www.enttec.com/?main_menu=Products&pn=70304
It's a good interface and does the job it's meant to and most people here use enttec as well.
Be sure to check that the one you get is supported for freestyler software
