Need MIDI help/suggestions about a fixture

Post by kittmaster »

Fast overview, my entire show is controlled by a Numark orbit, via MIDI, to control the light sequences via the cue buttons to trigger shows as needed.

The problem: I have two micro galaxians that are attached to a dimmer pack on Channel 26, they only need to TOGGLE on/off and are NOT part of any cue list button. I can't figure out how to attach a MIDI message to toggle only the micro galaxian fixture to turn on and off by itself via MIDI.

I can turn it on and off if I click on the object and drive the fader on the top right, but that still is a PITA because it just needs to be a 0/1 not 0-127 (via fixture creator needs correction?).

Can someone suggest a basic course of action how to just to be able to toggle a fixture just on/off via MIDI without any interaction with the cuelist button states? Basically just to switch the fixture dumbly on and off like a true power switch. (FYI, I have a dummy load on the fixture to keep it shut off correctly)

I hope I've made the set up clear, if not, please ask me to clarify.

Thanks for any feedback.

Chris

I just tried it, and should the lamp bar be going between 0 and max when the override becomes active? I see the triangle, but don't see the bar to show the lamp went from 0 to max?

I guess my other question is how to make the fixture "digital" where it can only be 0 or 255 and not treated as a dimmer? The laser needs to be just turned on or off, nothing in between.

I've looked at the output window and I don't see it switching from 0 to anything using the over ride. Must be something subtle I'm missing.

Any ideas?

Ah, ok, I moved it back to the intensity channel in the fixture and when I hit the over ride the output shows 0 and 255 on the channel, it just does not update the "bar" in the slide out window.

Not sure if exactly that is a bug in the software, but I think should have some feedback as to its issue.

I'll test the hardware tonight since the software "seems" to be doing it right.

More to it than this it seems, it only works while the fixture is selected, it does not work at all for midi acceptance to override 1 button via MIDI.

I'll submit a bug for it.

Does the fixture only have one channel? On / Off?

This is the only time you should connect a fixture to power that is on off.

Overrides should be on/off.

Make sure that the Values in your fixture file are absolute. 0,255. If midi it will be 0/1 On off. Also midi will be 0-127. :) lol My bad.

I use Ableton Live the same way but through cues. :)

The fixture is a non DMX piece, but it is attached to a dimmer pack/switcher pack that is set up with a dummy load to act as the "on/off" switch to the units power cord. As it stands now, the hardware "works" if I click on the fixture and move the slider to the 0 and 255 positions. I need the over ride to do the same thing without any values in the middle. I know what you mean about absolute, but I'm not sure how to do that (yet) in fixture creator, is there a specific way to do that? I have other fixtures that will benefit from the same method if I can figure out how to make it work.

I can see 0 and 127 in the midi monitor in freestyler when I press the button, so the midi is definetely working, just its not applying it to the override button itself, but the override software button works when I click it with the mouse, but not responding to the midi controller itself.

I did report it as a bug, waiting for feedback from the author to see if it is connected to my old thread about midi not working with the cuelist buttons.

:)
