Minimum Computer Requirements?

Post by kjacobs »

Does anyone know what the minimum computer requirements are for FS, beside just Win 2000 or XP?

I have tried running the earlier version 2.95f on an old AMD K-6 475MHz with Win 2000 and it seems to work fine. I have also downloaded the new version 2.96j, but haven't had a lot of time to play around with it, yet. We don't use it for sound to light or anything heavy duty, just running the light rig manually. Just curious what kind of older and newer machines are running FS.

FS runs like lightning on my machine.

Intel Q6600 quad core processor
2GB 800MHZ Corsair RAM
MSI P6N-SLI V2 motherboard
512MB XFX NVidia Geforce 8600GTS graphics card
With some other bells and whistles

Topped off with a samsung 19" Widescreen TFT with a 2MS response rate.

So I'd have no trouble running this off a Eee PC? 1.6GHz Atom processor/Win XP/1GB RAM?

I've been using it on a Core2 Duo big computer, but looking for something portable.

I just can't ignore this stupid post, even not when its posted in 1970. Sorry.
Oh my god. So what does this post add to this topic?
Should I mention all the great equipment I have at home?
Should I tell what car I drive? Should I tell I work with some worldwide know DJ's using FS?
Should I ... well, most people will get the point by now. :ugeek:

Here's the thing.

It's not just FreeStyler that has its own requirements. You also use a DMX interface that has some requirements.
Now my opinion, based on nothing real. Just some experience in software development other than FS:
When people don't use sound to light (wich is in my opinion the most heavy when enabled) FS and your DMX interface should be able to run on a 600MHz computer Win 2000 with 500MB memory. Maybe even slower will work great.
Why?
Things that FreeStyler does are in fact quite complex for humans but for a processor its a peace of cake, IF the software is written properly.
It is not rocket science. Don't get me wrong; FreeStyler is a great piece of software!
I have a spare workstation laying around somewhere, it is a W2K 666Mhz / 256MB, maybe I'll plug it in and see how FreeStyler runs on that.

But for your conveniance: I run FreeStyler on an old laptop (not going to use my brand new one on parties where people are throwing their drinks to eachother): Compaq/HP NX6110 Intel celeron m @ 1.4 GHz 1 GB DDR SDRAM .
Running great with almost no CPU load, indicating that the processor is way more than fast enough.
When enabling Sound to light, there's a higher load, about 20/25%. Works good.
But that could be a problem for a 600MHz machine.

I'm normally running it on a high-end pc, but also tried it on a AMD Athlon (not athlon XP!) 500 Mhz with 512 MB ram and it worked fine. (Win XP)
Never tried large shows or live shows on it, but I do know it runs and can controls like 5 led pars. (was testing the sound-to-light module)

It's like you said...not the FS but the controller could make the computer slower. If you use an Enttec Open Dmx, you will see that the pc (laptop) Compac 600MHz 192MB SDRAM much more slower when you run 3 or more sequences that an Athlon 1.0GHz 512SDRAM, because the pc need to do everything... but i think if you use the Enttec Pro it's better. The second pc works perfectly, but i never try the sound module... hi hi hi.
