Override questions

Post by kwelch007 »

Hi folks,

I've created an override that I intend to use as an instantaneous "blackout" for certain lights, and turn other certain lights on, and then vice versa. Works fine, except, I usually control my front-lighting by hand (I like to adjust intensity and such,) which means I'm already overriding them. It seems that, because I've already "overridden" those front-lights, my Override Button won't override them. How can I fix this?

Also, I've created another override for the front-lights that has 8 steps (it's a fast ROYGBIV type sequence.) It works fine in the editor, but when I try to run in in live mode, it doesn't change steps...it just runs the first step and stops. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

hi this can be hard to explain as there are 2 differnt way to override a DMXChannel

at a look at this:
http://www.freestylersupport.com/wiki/p ... e_triangle

But the overridebuttons are like a Button it has a OFF state and ON state.
the OFF state = the Default Fixture settings
the ON state = Step/scene 1 from a Sequence.

if you like to run a Seq with more then one Step/Scene you need to run this on the Cue or Submasters.

and as the link says you can make a Manual override or use a ORButton
a Manual override will ALLWAYS win from a ORbutton.

ONLY if you Enable. "HIGHEST PRIORITY" on the ORbuttons options..
this way it will work as LTP "Latest Takes Precedence" or a realy easy example "Whatever was just said – let’s do that "

and you can release all Manual orverides if you press "RELEASE ALL" or the blue triangle on FS menu bar..

Another way to "override" a DMX channel could be to use MIDI to DMX, where-in you can control fixtures / channels /parameters on your front (or rear) lights directly, while blackout/fade-out of the rest of the lights and their cues are running. You can also assign MIDI control to most, if not all, of the fixture programming functions, which I think will then control those functions (say, DIMMER or STROBE SPEED, for example) for all selected fixtures.

I started out using the overides for a lot of stuff until I realized that only the first scene of any given sequence will be used as an override. Subsequently, I use them for presets, accentuation to running cues, "panic" lights, or just as a plain old "manual" mode for latched scenes.

While I am still trying to (re)figure out the submasters (especially MIDI control), it seems like you might set up two for yourself - one for your front lights and one for the backline lights, and split your cues up accordingly to where you can dim / play / stop / step through Sub 1 for your fronts and seperately use Sub 2 for the back. Again, MIDI control here of these (Submaster) functions will add fluidity and multi-play capability as opposed to a mouse/single task at a time manner of playback. (Multi-touch monitor, if compatible, would also be a nice way to control them.)

Yo Jimmie. Hope I can meet you in person sometime LOL.

That was the exact path I am exploring. Submasters seem to be the tool to use for what I want...I've just never used them and the documentation is brief to say the least.

Right - that's the boat I've been in for a little while. They don't seem to operate the same as I remember Light Jockey cue-lists working. I think part of it is that the Cue / Cuelist and the submasters are not separated, and you kinda have to understand the submasters before you can really program for them, which means I have been having to re-do & re-think my cues and how I run the shows. But the upside is that along with the MIDI controller, there is a lot more parallel-ity (word?) going on once you seperate out your cue elements. From there it just becomes like everything else in digital land: file management. (Where did I put that and what did I call it, and did what I called it make sense?)

Yeah, that's the impression I get. My big question is, do sub-masters work with S2L? I don't yet know either way, but I need that. It's too hard to mix and do lights at the same time and mess with multiple tappers. There's gotta be a way to do it.

It sounds like you're on the right track. This is what I do - have dimmed par can front lights that I control with faders on a BCF2000 (using MIDI to DMX), then I have separate submasters for:
- back light colour
- back light intensity
- front light LED colour (different; not par cans)
- front light LED intensity
So then the scene you put on your override buttons should only control what you want to fix/override - and the others can still be changed.
E.g. You might have a button for full white on the LED front lights, but then everything else (backs and front par cans) can still be adjusted while the colour/intensity of the front LEDs stays put.

Then, when you've got cues with multiple scenes, you can make cue lists and put those on the cue list buttons - so you have the 8 steps you wanted still moving through - but it's a cue list button, not an override button.

(I can't answer your S2L question - I haven't used it yet.)

I think the S2L should work with submasters, as they are just running cues in a different controlled order, and those cues are still affected by S2L.

I tried to use some of my existing cues with submasters during a show this weekend. As they were not written to be used this way, along with mixing sound, it was still a little difficult to really grasp what was going on with some of the stuff. But the extra controls I have added on the BRC for speed controls (cue slots and master speed) has finally given me a nice real-time way to adjust and change a lot of my existing cues on the fly. I may even start saving some of the ones I come up with as new cues to use with submasters. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try some more out on Saturday, as I won't be needing lights (supplied by venues) at my next few days gigs.

Long and the short, Kendell: You need a control surface of some sort.
