unable to select group of fixtures

i'm probably missing the complete obvious here, so bare with me, as a newbie.

I am trying to create a group containing two fixtures so i can control the colours for both fixtures at once.
I think i have created a group as when i select the group it highlights the two fixtures i have assigned.
However, changing the colour only controls the second of the two fixtures.
Yet it i select both fixtures manually (in the main screen) so they are both highlighted that way the colour change does work for both fixtures at the same time.

Can anyone tell me why i cant select both fixtures as part of my one and only "group"
