I've upgraded from traditional pars to rgb LED and wondering what is the best way to control them was, do you use dmx400,submasters,cues etc?
With my old pars I created a few chases and added them to a submaster list so I could control them along with my other other lights, this seemed simple enough to do as all I could do was create chaes, however it seems a lot of work creating different chases with colours in there too.
Since most of my work is mobile roadshow disco type stuff. I was thinking of creating a submaster list of my favorite chases colours and slow moving colour changes for early on in the evening then reverting to DMX400 later on when the party kicks in.
I have 8 LED pars in total and just curious to what other people do to control there LED pars?

I do as you do with submasters. As we are limited to 20 cues in each sub master I have 3 separate submasters for my Pars and a bunch of override buttons. One submaster has a cuelist of static colours, one has slow chases (with fades and less obnoxious colours) and one has fast chases (with snaps and brighter colours). The override buttons just have the static colours.
One problem with this setup is that if you are running 2 chases at once funny things can happen depending on what channels are saved into the cues. This becomes more of a problem with movers and stuff. You just need to stop one chase as you start the next one. The override buttons are a good way to cover these changes if you need to. The advantage is that you get an extra 20 chases for each submaster you use. If you end up getting a bigger rig and want to trigger a bunch of movers and stuff too, this approach is probably going to do your head in as you try to remember which channel to start and which to stop etc... But is a great way to control a bigger number of chases.
I find I can quickly make a bunch of colour chases with the colour palette on the simplest setting. These colours don't always match the gels in my other lights, but it is easy enough to tweak if that is important to your stuff. I don't really bother for my DJ stuff. as long as the lights are flashing and interesting, people don't seem to notice weather the colours are matched perfectly.
