Midi in does not trigger with new version

Post by Luvac Zantor »

I just started using Freestyler, found it pretty easy to jump into (computers and networks are my day gig).

The problem I'm having is when i try to assign a midi note to anything.... it registers it... but won't trigger the sequence, etc... after I save the settings.

if I do this for keyboard shortcuts, it works fine.

I'm trying to trigger sequences (cues rather) From Midi notes from Sonar. But even though it will "save" the notes, it never triggers the lights.

I tried this on my usb M-Audio Trigger Finger, as well as from my Korg Triton. They will save the note, but it does nothing afterwards.

What am I missing here? Thanks!!!

That's because Freestyler also uses the value. The value varies from 0 to 127, depending how hard you push the key (velocity). I'm having the same issue: i have a Behringer UMX-49 midi keyboard and when i tried to use it only my rotarys work, not the keys.

Sorry for my bad English. I'm from Holland. 8-)

yeah, i did notice that and did tests with it. Still the same issue. Sonar can send midi signals at a set velocity each time. I even used it to record, careful to make sure the "strike" is recorded and not the release.

Still does absolutely nothing. The work around is with Bome's Midi Translator. I use that to capture the midi notes, and convert to keystrokes, and it appears to work.

I would just like to remove the middle man program here and just go directly to freestyler. Bome registers the hits, but Freestyler for some reason doesn't. (I went back to stable version to test too, same effect).

Just baffling me. It records the note, but then it never triggers anything.

i too have an m-audio trigger finger,

i can get freestyler to recognise the pads, just set the velocity to full,
then the pads work, if you don't se the velocty to full then they only work when you hit them at full velocity.

i'm not having any luck with the fader or pots though.

did you get them to work?

freestyler is great, its got all the features i could ever need. just need to make sure and test it nice whilst it's still in beta.

there will always be beta versions but what i mean is while this version is still beta. i was expecting a stable release soon, i don't know why, its just that 2.96i sounds kind of suspenseful.
development cycles are supposed to go: alpha, beta, release candidate, stable.
however it dosent always go like that......

anyway i got it working, basicly it's like this:

midi setup is a bit unintuitive, but as long as you remember these seemingly undocutmented facts, it all goes good,

midi notes MUST have a velocity of 127 when used with switch type commands.

you need to assign a dmx channel in the mysterious "extra" column when setting up dmx to midi channels.

notes and control change messages are both good.

the following is probably just idle speculation but i'll share it anyway.....
freestyler dosent realy care if its a note or a controler. since the last two bytes are the same anyway. and although i havent tested throughly it it looks like freestyler dosent care about channel either.
it seems that it only sees the last two bytes of each midi message.
whilst ignoring the status byte would be a neat programing shortcut, hopefully freestyler is a bit cleverer than that or else it could behave in unpredictable ways if you had anything else going down the same midi cable, like somebody playing "the entertainer" on the octave that coresponded to your dmx to midi channels!(pretty music synced chases) or a worst case scenario:clock messages that happened to end with the same two bytes as your blackout key! blackout for no aparent reason X secconds after you press play!

in this case it is probably best not to mix midi streams between freestyler and other programs.

although i dont know the progress of the next stable... RC1 kinda gives a hint... I always use the newest beta anyway... but then again i dont have as much to lose as some people!
