synchronising light show to music

I am new to the world of DMX programming. Before I launch into learning the program, I would like to know if it is at all possible to sync the light scenes/changes to music. The group I currently do lights for uses a backing track so the music will always be in the same timing.

Examples of what I would like to program would be like: on the 5 bar/or say 15th second I would like a red light to go on in the colour fusion and at the 10th bar I would like the scanners to change colour and move from left to right during that bar.

Ideally, I would anticipate the sound engineer to press play on the laptop to start the backin track which would at the same time trigger the light show to start as well.

you have use winamp and enable time codes in the freestyler cue manager, you can then triiger cues by the track number and track time from winamp
