URGENT MIDI HELP-NEED TO GET THIS WORKING BY TOMORROW (THU)

Post by Tom »

Hi guys,

So I want to use a lighting desk with MIDI to trigger stuff. Basically I want to open up the cue window, build a list of sequences and then press buttons on the desk to fire them off.

BUT

It's not working. Selected the outputs and inputs in the MIDI window. Go to 'start', 'assign notes' and then press the relevent button on the desk. This shows up - for example as note 62 - so I click off 'assign notes' so it is not selected then click save, however it does not work.

Trying it here now with a MIDI keyboard, have just tried the toggle all fixtures. Assigned a note and everything but it just isn't working :(

What am I doing wrong!?

Cheers

EDIT: Managed to get the toggle all working here with my MIDI keyboard - have to match the velocity too - however the lighting desk doesn't give out a velocity; it's fixed. Only a note. Any ideas on that?

Have you looked in the freestyler.ini file in the freestyler folder?

There is a setting for the midi trigger velocity required. You might try lowering or playing with that figure.

Also freestyler only works if there is a note-on (at relevant velocity) followed by a note off (velocity=0) otherwise it can look like its trigged but hasn't really.
Obviously ona keyboard this happens when you let go of the key, but the lighting desk may not do this.
I hope that helps in your investigations.

If you have a little more time, you can use midiyoke and midi-ox (two bits of freeware you can find on the net) together to examine what messages are coming through the midi and even add data mappings so that a note-on is always follwed by the relevent note-off after a delay of a set amount of milliseconds.

Thanks ever so much Ben - I think that could be what it is.

I know the desk sends out velocity 67 on the MIDI notes, and the ini on this PC (different to the one I'm using to run the show but I imagine will be the same ini) said it required a velocity of 127 to work.

I am pleased to report Ben that did indeed work!

However, I don't think the desk sent a Note off command (0 velocity) as once I had started a seuqnce I couldn't stop it again. This makes me think that a note off command wasn't sent so Freestyler thought the buttong was effectively being held down.

Need to look into Midi-OX and find out how you do it.
