Need help with Freestyler/Entec Open DMX

Post by djdawg321 »

I've gone over my set up with a fellow dj buddy and it looks like everything is set up correctly but I just can't make this thing work. It's almost like it's not getting a signal....

Vista Laptop
Entec Open DMX dongle....I have the 5 pin adapter cord into my cable and the cable into my Chauvet Colorstrip.
I have the address as "1" in Freestyler and also on the light.

When I click on the fixture graphic on my main freestyler screen the Lamp, Colors and Macros boxes come up. My friend tells me I should just be able to click on Chase 1, chase 2, etc in the macro box and things should start working. I have nothing...nothing is happening... help! Can someone help me troubleshoot this thing?

I use the Enttec Pro, but the setup should be the same for the Open DMS. There are alot of things that can be over looked when setting up the dongle for the first time. Here are a few things for starters:

-Did you check to see if your pc is recoginizing the Enttec (in your com ports, in Device Manager)?
-Did you load the Enttec drivers?
-Did you set up the correct com parameters (9600,8,1,none) for that specific com port in Device Manager?
-Is the correct com port setup in Freestyler? Meaning, if Device Manager says the Enttec is using com port 5, did you match that up in Freestyler's setup?
-Are you sure the 5 pin to 3 pin converter cable is terminated correctly? Did you ohm it to verify?
-Have you tried any other lights or is it just the colorstrip not working?

Looks like I'm having a problem getting the Entec to show up in the device manager. I'm using Vista and I've installed the drivers...which was a pain and I'm STILL not sure they installed correctly because I'm not seeing all of the steps and dialogue boxes pop up as it says in the manual, (but at the end it did say the drivers were correctly installed) but maybe that's because it's Vista? I've switched cords and ports and it still won't show up in the device manager.
