Dimmer or individual par cans?

Post by mikeb »

I've got a 12 channel DMX dimmer driving a bunch or par cans (1 DMX channel controls each dimmer channel). Am I best configuring the fixtures as a multichannel dimmer, or individual par cans? What's the advantage/disadvantage of each method? TIA

Both is best.
What is really the best, is the one that suites you the most, how you intend to use it.

i'm using a BCF2000 MIDI controller to programme/control my par cans. therefore i use individually par can fixtures. doing this i can control the intensity for each par can from my MIDI controller.

if you want to quickly programme your par cans manually into chases i would recommend you use a dimmer pack fixture. then you dont have to deselect/select each new par can, but can control the whole thing from one fixture.

if you want to set all your par cans to full its easiest to have individually par can fixtures because you selects all of them and then turn the intensity up. you have to do this for each channel if you use a dimmer pack fixture

if you want to use the FX generator you have to have individually par cans, so the Freestyler knows which channels have to be programmed.

so, as remco_k said. whats working for you is the best solution. play around and see whats best suits your needs. but if you ask me I prefer individually par can fixtures. I use the same method for my 6 segments LED bar; I have a fixture for each segment so I easier can control the segments form my MIDI controller and easier can set the same colour for all segments.

(freestyler have several ways to do things at... awesome :fs: )

Personally I would patch whatever type of fixture is attached to each channel of the dimmer pack.

My logic is that you control the fixtures not the dimmer pack.
