Position Memory

Post by jpsquid »

I just started to use the amazing software. about 8 years ago I was using DMX Creator and then got out of lighting. Now with the new band I am in I have been asked to get involved with the production side of things. This software is fantastic my only questions thus far is
how do I set up Memory Postions???
Different club / theatre will have different aspects and angles without reprograming the whole show is there a way to linf a a position to a sequence (Cue) etc..
So when we show up to a new place I can just update the x y positions and everythign will be in focus
Any Info will help
thanks
Jerry

Has been implemented in the new beta, makes programing and re programing much easier.
For now you could have a look at the pan tilt resize, not the same but stops your lighting spending all night off stage.

Hello I currently am also interested in position memories. I have a couple of animator consoles and they had twwo really useful features. 1 position libraries that could be used in any cue (scene) so you would have say 5 focus libraries IE drummer, guitar, bass, keys and singer. Update these with a remote trackball from the stage store them and it automatically updates the entire show. Extremely fast to do. Second is a function called delta. Say someone kicks one of your floor lights and it rotates. While in any cue switch on delta and re-focus. This then effects all the following cues to correct the problem. These features would be very welcome. If I could also get a copy of the Beta software to test I would greatly appreciate it.

Kind regards,
Rick

This feature (called presets in FS) was implemented in Freestyler 3.0 (use the newest release 3.2.1 which has a lot of bugfixes for the presets and other things)

Read the subject "Create/use presets" in "Help --> Content" in FS for further infomation.

I'm not sure I understand this?

He means that if you have made a nice sequence with your moving head shining into someones eye, that someone gets annoyed and turns the moving head a bit so it does not shine into the eyes anymore. (or onto a butt, or any other object you are shining on).
As a light designer you want to compensate that slight turn of the head so you can shine in that eye again, without having to modify all pan values in sequences where this head is used in.

Actually, I believe an solution is already provided in FS. It is not called delta but "Correction". Which, in this case, means the same.
See Setup->FreeStyler Setup->Preferences->Correction. Here you can set any correction to any DMX channel. In this case you could set an correction of -20 to compensate the slight turn, for example. Be aware that the total range of 256 values within that DMX channel is now lowered with 20. Where ever you try to set the PAN value in FS, you won't get it higher than 235. (because of the -20 correction).
So its not really exactly the same as Delta... But it does what you want.

Another solution is just to glue the fixture onto the stage. (Read: fix its position with tape)

And maybe yet another solution is the pan/tilt resize in the same settings screen.

Heres what i would do:

I program by attribute so it goes something like this...

1) Select the desired fixtures and move it to the position you want.
2) Save this as a sequence and call it something like 'Lights on Mirror ball' and make sure only the positional parameters are recorded (ie all the other splash screens for colour etc should have a red 'off' indicated).
3) Use this sequence (and a combination of others for colour, shutter, strobe etc) to create the look you want. Check out the recent tutorial on submasters to see how to do this.
4) Save these elements as a cue and load them onto a cuelist button for easy access if you like.

Now...

When you take your rig to a new location, the mirror ball will probably be hanging in a different location. Thats OK as all you have to do is quickly update the original 'lights on mirror ball' position sequence and it will flow through to all cues using that particular sequence.

I hope this makes sense?
