Sound to light and steps...

Post by MTurner »

Hi guys...

I am trying to program my adj revo 3's in FS, (which are basically a matrix of different leds in 8 groups) to respond to sound to light in the way in which i want.

It just does not seem possible with FS to get close to the sound to light mode built into the lights.

1st of all i have a vellamn which i know is slow. I'm gunning for an entec pro, but thats not the point.
I want to make a number (lets say 4) steps of my sequence trigger with each beat of the music.

E.g. I want to make each beat of the sound to light trigger 4 steps of my sequence.
It would be great if there was a way for the sound to light in FS to trigger a number of steps.

In the same way, using this concept i could get my 4 scans to turn on and off (e.g. flash) one after the other on each beat of the music, which would look wicked !

Any ideas ?
The Revo 3 built in sound to light looks amazing, but i must have control !!!!
I have managed to get some sort of result in FS by using fades and snaps, but not a patch on the lights auto mode.

Cheers
Martin

Lets see if I understand you correctly:
If 1 beat is detected by the sound 2 light application, your sequence needs to make 4 steps ahead at once? Whats the point of that, as that will not be visible at all because of the high speed the steps are made?

Or do you want to scatter those 4 steps evenly over the time from one beat to another?
Lets call it a beat multiplier. If there is 1 beat detected in the audio, the Sound 2 light application sends 4 beats scattered evenly until the next beat.

If both options are not correct, please try to make a better description.

And; dumping the Velleman interface is a good thing to do if you need fast responses from your lights.

Exactly.

One beat triggers 4 steps of the sequence one after the other, evenly spaced before the next beat.
I like the term beat multipler!. Good one.

The ADJ Revo has about 6 rings of leds, each ring is a different colour.
So the idea would be to get each ring to flash very quickly, making a sort of pulsing effect in time with the music...

If you had a load of par cans, and wanted them to strobe in time, then i can imagine this would also be useful.

Nice one.

I'll put the beat multiplier on the shoplist for the next beta release. Its actually a quite simple addition with the BPM already there.
Ofcourse it can then be disabled and modified.

There's only 2 problems:
1. It will multiply for all running cue's, as the Sound 2 Light application only sends the trigger to FS and FS dispatches the trigger to all running cues. So If you want the multiplier to just have effect on one cue while more are running, that won't be possible.
2. The multiplier will only work quite good if the Sound 2 Light application has calculated a proper BPM. So it might lose 'sync' with difficult music.

it looks like it can do the job. Great work remco.

but i think it should be a feature in freestyler. as it is now you can get out of sync if the S2L triggers at the wrong time (which happens some times). and you have to adjust all your sequence which is S2L active, if you dont want them to change step all the time, but just on the beat.

it would be better if you can configure a sequence to run 2 steps (or more) at the same time (after eachother). if you have 4 steps you want to run on one beat, and the S2L triggers on no beat, the sequence can just reset and start again from step one.. that way it wont get out of sync.

maybe it should be a feature in the Cue window or the sequence editor? I prefer the cue window, then you can use one sequence in different ways (just like the "Disable all fades" feature in the cue window).

I find that a good idea. It gives more flexibility an more reliability. :)

This idea will also help this topic: http://www.freestylersupport.com/fsforu ... f=8&t=1787
Its in fact the same question, somewhat.

Nice update(1.0.0.2 Beta) , so I am now able to change the Beatcounts without restarting the program. :) Just set the beatcount in the freestyler.ini to 4.
What does this mean? - If you set the multiplier to 4 every beat is now one step in lightchanging. If it is set to zero ervery forth beat is a new step. And if you are changing the multiplier to 2 every second beat is a new step in freestyler.
Thanks for this great possibility!

FYI: I Released a new beta in which you can let S2L restart sequences to their first step on real beats. So flashing a fixture on a beat becomes possible now.
