RS232 port to DMX ?

Post by djmoonie »

Hi guys,

I'm just starting out with DMX and would like some advice on what interface to buy with freestyler.

Whilst doing a little research, I wondered if it was possible to use an existing usb to rs 232 serial cable that I have ? Is this possible ?
If so what adapter would I need to change the 9 pin D plug on the end, to a 3 pin circular DMX one ?

If it helps.. the manufacturer for the cable is here:- http://www.ftdichip.com

And I believe the chip is one of these three:- FT8U100AX, FT8U232AM and FT8U245AM.

Thanks guys!

Although there are some products on the market that will convert rs232 to DMX its not really worth doing.
USB to DMX dongles are easily avalible and range in price from about 30 to 150 pounds (Id reccommend and Enttec unit!)

None.

There's no way you can use that RS232 output as DMX source without more hardware other than some passive adapter (without electronics in it) to 3 pin XLR.
DMX is close to (or the same as) RS485, wich is far from what RS232 is.

So your options are: Buy a ready made USB to DMX or RS232 to DMX converter.
And for the sake of future: Choose a USB to DMX.
