need some help newbie here

Post by matj1990 »

hello all. been dj'ing for about a 2 years now. My lights have always been sound to light. well i think im ready to take the plunge into playing with dmx.

What i need help with is what exactly do i need
i have downloaded the software and it seems simple enough to use / Im an IT guy :) it is my day occupation

seems i need a usb to dmx controller here is where i have no clue what i am doing. i suppose what to get depends on what i want to do. well i simply just want to be able to control my lights.
I have purchased 4 mini spots from ebay. upon doing research they seem to be the same thing as the minspot by chauvet.

My main goal is to be able to control there function. and possibly add some of my other lights but thats later on

i also have these lights that are dmx capable colorail, kintax, fallout .

So if your still reading after all of my crappy writing skills lmao i would like ot know what else i am going to need - links to products would be great!!! as i have no clue what usb-dmx controller i need

hi and welcom to the Freestyler forum

Well to controll your light with freestyler you dont need that much.
You need a Laptop/pc to run the software on.
you need a Usb to DMX controller, i recommend the Enttec pro or DMXking PRO, basicly they are the same but the dmxking is much cheaper and they are the most Stable controller you can get.
you need some DMX/XLR kabels to connect all the lights to each other (Daisy chain).

and you need your light but you allready have some nice lights.
The minispots as Moving light.
the colorrail for the Basic colors.
and the kintax and fallout for Special moments ;)
i also recommend to get a Smoke/Haze machine to let the light beam look even cooler.

and you need to look at this page : http://www.freestylersupport.com/wiki/
here you can find everything about the DMX512 protocal and how to program/control freestyler.
and everything to create your own Fixture file.

still having problems just post again ;)

Thanks for all the info it is much appreciated

I do have a fog machine- plan to get a hazer soon
all of the moving heads come with cables link them together

what gets me is if their linked together all using the same cable - if i want to move say just the 3rd one in the chain how does that work ?

Hej Matj1990

Most of the controlers you will find are 3 pins.

The cable between the fixtures is linked meaning each fixture has a input and a output so you just insert the one you wan't.

Each fixture has a unique address and this is what counts.
Which order they are placed in dosen't matter.

Think you should have a look at the wiki.
All basics are described there so just start to read. :D
