Syncing multiple installs of freestyler

Post by ih8censorship »

I'm trying to find the best way to sync multiple installs of freestyler. My intent is to use it as a means of backing up shows and fixtures, while making it easy to have an up to date light show if we have some sort of computer problem with the main computer. I need fixture changes and location files to sync between installs. I was thinking of using dropbox for the location files, that seems easy enough. However I'm not sure how freestyler handles fixtures. Are they just stored in the ./Fixtures folder or is the freestyler.ini file important as well? I looked at it and saw this
[RecentfilesCreator]
..
remember3=Legend250rx.fxt
remember4=qspot575.fxt
..
also, does anyone know if freestyler is portable in the sense I could just copy all of the program files to another machine and have it work fine from there, rather than using the installer? That may be the best option, to avoid program version issues between machines and files, and all machines would get program updates whenever they synced with dropbox too.

Any other suggestions are more than welcome :)

I've never worked with Dropbox so I can't help you with that, but what I do to maintain "sync" between my production installation of FS and testing/development installations is to use the Backup/Restore feature. It's a manual process:
1. Create/edit a location (add/remove/change fixtures as needed, define keyboard shortcuts and MIDI control, etc.)
2. Create/edit sequences and cues, configure submasters, cue list buttons, override buttons, etc.
3. Use the Backup feature (under File - Backup/Restore) to merge all this down to a single file
4. Install FS on the target computer if needed, then copy the backup file from step 3 to that computer
5. Use the Restore feature with the file copied in step 4.

Done! You should now have an exact copy of your FS setup on the new machine. Any time you make changes to one installation, just back it up and restore to the other and you're set. Hope that helps!
