I'm new to freestyler, and as well as dmx.
I'm working on a project to control a stepper motor via dmx. I want to create a new fixture, to test my controller that I am developing. I see the FIXTURE on the main bar, but it is grayed out.

the reason you cant select the fixture menu is that you most likely dont have added any fixtures to freestyler (and highlighted one). the menu is to configure the fixtures individually... to do add fixture(s) to freestyler, select setup --> Add/Remove fixtures.
to create a new fixture for your motor you fist have to open fixture creator program which was installed with fs.
From what you write, it sounds like you don't have read the help file. You should do this (help-->content).
