Confused about steps!

I have a newbie question! I've started to create some basic sequences and am wondering, let's say I want to create a sequence consisting of one light (parcan x) very slowly fading from 100% to 0%, whilst another light (parcan y) does some other stuff. I'd need to add new steps in to do the colour changes etc for parcan y (I assume), but when the new step begins, the action in the previous step seems to be cancelled?

Is there a way for a previous step to keep doing it's thing whilst other steps kick in?

Chris

You don't always need a new step. I myself sometimes put some things on the same step i.e par cans, moving heads, etc

It all depends what you are doing and what you are planning on using it for really. I find ORB (override buttons) useful for moving heads, scanners, etc to change gobos and colours as it's set to a keyboard shortcut.
