Has anyone ever thought about modding a cheap chinese moving head fixture or making their own DMX controlled mini-missile/rocket launcher? Kind of like the USB rocket launchers... it'd be great for a desktop or side-console toy!

yes, try ARDUINO.
and i fixed a OLD hazer with it.
you can connect:
RS-485 IC to receive DMX.
LEDs.
Servos.
Stepper motors.
Relays.
solenoids.
