Dmx and Arduino

Was going to play around with some diy dmx led lights, but am wondering how to daisy chain multiple units.
In the DMX world, when you have a light with a dmx in and out, what is on the out?
Does the serial data just get tied to the other connection in parallel? Or does the data go in, do its job then get re sent out the other connection?
I guess another way to ask is, does the whole data chain look the same from beginning to end, and each device is just looking for its specific address?
