Lights that shouldn't be on stay on

So sorry, I should be able to figure this out, but I have read a bunch and don't seem to be able to. when I switch from one cue to another, lights that I have not set up on the one cue stay on. from reading, sounds like this may be related to a snap feature, but if it is, I don't understand how to set it. I really want to get away from a board. but would like freestyler to be set up to act similarly, like when you play a scene on a board it only plays the lights you have programmed for each scene. Any help with this would be great thanks!!

Every channel of every light is 'off' / transparent (eg has no effect) in each new scene of each cue you create.
This is normal and desired behaviour. When you change a value for a channel on a light in your new scene it will become either 'snap' (instant change when you play the sequence back) or a 'fade' (takes the amount of time specified in the fade time option for that scene to change to its new value - eg colour fades smoothly from one to next).
Anything you wish to be effected - like turning off other lights - can be done by selecting all the lights on the first step of the sequence and setting dimmer/master output to zero - and changing the off/fade/snap setting button by the dimmer to 'snap' to make it change instantly.
If this seems like a bit of effort doing that each time you could instead try saving a new sequence with the lights all set to snap to off, and saving it as 'blank scene template' or similar easily recognisable name and just opening that for a starting point when you want to create a new sequence. Just being careful to 'save as' to save your new sequence instead of overwriting it.

Hey thanks so much for the response, I think i get what you are saying, I'm not sure it is happening for me. when I program a sequence the lights are off, say for instance a laser, but during playback if the sequence before has the laser programmed on, when I switch to an new sequence that does not have the laser on in playback, the laser stays on. So I see what you are saying with a template that has all the lights off as a start point for programming. Is that the best way to program that. when I program with a board, if the light is not on in programming it will not show up in the playback, sorry my only experience is with a light board.
one more question, if you program with a snap setting can you get it to fade in playback somehow manually
again thanks so much for spending the time to get back to me

Snap is an instant change.
Fade is smoothed over whatever time you decide you would like it to take in the fade time option.
With freestyler (and also other lighting software, and some really high end boards) it is normal to not effect the things that are not specifically changed in a scene. This allows you if you wanted to run multiple cues at once, eg one cue driving laser patterns, one could be controlling moving light movement, and another could be running only colour selections (Check out 'submasters' tutorial in wiki) and because they only change the values for the things you specified them to change, and nothing else, it means they can run stacked together without interfering with each other.
Just play around and practice, you will probably find once you properly grasp the possibilities of what you can do it will become second nature and really quick and easy in no time.

Hey Thanks, I will play around. I appreciate your tips to get me started!
