Cant get the sound in 'sound to light'

Not sure what happened but am running 2.96i on my laptop (on board sound) and am able to use 'sound to light'.
I can see the "sound "in the sensitivity meter 'jumping' up and down in the meter no problem and my fixtures (martin scanners) moving no problem.
However, I am running 2.96j on my "dj computer" (sound blaster audigy 2) and cannot use the sound to light.
I can't see the "sound" jumping in the meter.
I have enabled 'use fixture with sound', chose the sound card etc... same setup as on my laptop that works fine.
Not sure why it doesn't work on the other computer. Is it the version 2.96j. Is there a bug in this version or does it setup different?
