Sound to Light - Help!

Hi!
I have been recently been teaching myself to use freestyler as my business partner and I (who run a mobile disco company) are making the move to DMX controled by Freestyler. I have been very impressed with the software overall and think I know it well but when I use sound to light, which I have to use with just a microphone sat next to my speaker, there is a delay between when the microphone recieves the signal and freestyler S2L processes it (it is about a 1 second delay). I am having to use the microphone method because I don't have a line input. Do I need an exterior sound card? Or is it something else simple?
Please Help!
Thanks,
Jamie Ransom
