Joystick control using USB Gamepad

Hi all,

I've been using freestyler for a long time now, and I love the program.

I saw the joystick control option in the preferences settings, and wondered if I could use a joystick to control my scanners. My question is, what kind of device can be used with it? I currently have a USB Playstation controller and although this is not ideal, it does have a number of buttons and two analogue joysticks.

I tried to assign a joystick to the pan/tilt control options, but Freestyler doesn't recognise my input. Is this something which isn't supported or will a different device be better suited?

Does anyone use a device for joystick control, and if so what devices?

I would like to ask for some help with my problem, and thank anyone who can help in advance. I only have a small lighting setup so I am using the tools I have available.

Kind regards,
Adam

Hej Adam

Have you checked that you can control other programs on the PC with the gamepad.

My guess is that you miss an usb driver for the gamepad but I have no experience on this topic.

Hi Jan,

Yeah the gamepad does work normally in Windows, it's just Freestyler won't recognise the joysticks to be able to map them to the program.

I wish there was more support for this program.

Adam

I think you are out in a corner where only few users are and therefore feedback from other users will be a bit low.

One way to proceed could be to borrow a real usb joystick to see if this works. Then you can determine if it is just the game pad it don’t like or the program / setting that fails.

Can you in short describe what you are doing to configure FreeStyler for Joystick operation.

Hi Jan,

Well I have a direct USB gamepad now (to cut out the usb to playstation connector) and it still wouldn't work.

Basically I have checked the box in the Freestyler options which reads (Enable Joystick Support) and then changed the 'Toggle Pan/Tilt' and 'Enable Joystick' options to a button on the controller, and then when I click on Pan Left/Right and Tilt Up/Down and move the Joystick, the program won't map the right controls.

Am I doing something wrong?

I am just guessing now but.

If you go into "keyboard shortcuts" select a function and then press a button on the game pad then I think you should be able to see the button / key value in the field.
Then you can see that you are connected.

I guess that you have seen this post. :)

Hi Jan,

Yes when I press a button on the gamepad it is assigned and displayed in the keyboard shortcuts in Freestyler, only the joystick movement X Y does not assign to the program.

Shame I cannot get this to work, would another controller work better? It seems freestyler does not work with USB Joysticks - rather annoyingly!

Think I have to see if one of the kids has a gamepad i can borrow :)

Well if "joystick" don't work then we have to figur out if it is because we don't know how to configure FreeStyler or if there is a bug in FS.

You have connection to FS with you game pad and that is positive now we just need to verrify where it goes wrong.

If it is a bug then we need to get it fixed.

Have a nice weekend.

I have a PlayStation Dualshock 3 controller (USB and bluetooth) that I was able to get to work with FreeStyler on Win7 x64... In order to do it you need to make sure you have a driver for the controller (try www.motioninjoy.com for 64-bit drivers, not sure where to go for 32-bit drivers). Once you have the joystick drivers installed and working, go into the Keyboard Shortcuts in FreeStyler and you can assign functions to buttons in there.

Hej Hambone

I found a PS3 dualshock and got the driver for it (motioninjoy)
It is al up running and I can see that the keys on the controller is assigned as I want.
Joy1 on "enable joystick" and joy3 on "Toggle pan/Tilt"
They react. Can see that the blue ball moves to center when joy3 is pressed.

But I have no reaction on the x/y or the two other conthol sticks.

Are they to be configured in "keyboard shortcut" and to what.

Additional what type of controler have you set the driver to. Think there are 5 or 6 different in the motioninjoy.
