Super Complete Novice

Hey everyone,

I'm a complete intelligent lighting novice. I've learned some about dmx protocol etc, and am loving what i'm seeing about freestyler. I would however, appreciate a bit of guidance just figuring out what i need to learn in order to accomplish my goal.

Basically I have a setup with multiple LED RGB spots. I'm going to get a Korg Nano Pad or some similar controller so I have some buttons I can hit. Since I'm primarily a DJ and the lighting is just an additional fun thing for my gigs, I usually have the DJ program up front and center. I want to use the buttons to switch between lighting modes (I think they are called scenes? Or are they cues??)

Here's the modes I want:
Strobe - things just generally go bat shit crazy
Sound sensitive strobe - similar to the first one but kind of sound activated
Audio Chase - change color and fixture, different patterns
manual chase - hit one button a certain light lights up, another button a different one, non latching (as soona s i let go the light goes off)

Basically I want to replicate what I do with the American DJ Light Copilot with regular par cans, but with intelligent lights.

I'm not worried abotu programming the MIDI, I just need to find some tutorials on how to program the chase patterns, the strobe thing, etc. Are these different 'scenes'? And then each step in the chase pattern is a 'cue'?

I'm still browsing the forum for some tutorials on how to build a chase thing, so i'll just keep on that, and maybe i'm stupid for not finding one already, but if anyone has suggestions on where I should go to get started that would be freakin awesome.

Welcom to the Freestyler Forum.

you can find Info and tutorials on 2 places.
The Freestyler wiki http://www.freestylersupport.com/wiki
and if you open freetyler go to "Help"-> "Contents"

a Sequence contance Step/Scene (these are the same) 1 or more Default=15 its possible to make more steps.
a Cuelist contance Sequence's. and can hold up to 20sequence.
with the:
-Cuewindow, you can Play sequence's
-Cuelist buttons, You can play a Cuelist with a button
-Submasters, this one is more if you are a Lightjockey.
-Override buttons, this one play's sequence's but it only plays the first step On or Off, or it's also possible to flash a Overridebutton.

Take a look at it and if you still have any quations Go and ask.

That bit about the override buttons, man i never would have figured that out lol. Thanks.

the dmx400 thing is awesome. really helping me out. love it. Starting to figure out how to program my moving heads finally too.

Freestyler is freakin sweet.

Plus I found this company in cz that has dmx/usb interfaces for like $13. they work as if entec ones, but are bare bones (the circuit is exposed). Perfect for me since I built it into one of my racks. But i bought a few extras to keep around just in case too.

Now the question is, how do i replace my old light trees with new ones that are intelligent... without spending a lot of extra money.... lol

Oh another quick question, about moving head fixtures.

Since I'm mobile dj, when i show up I'd like to 'calibrate' the lights for the different points of say the dance floor. So front left is here front right is here. Then I'd like the sequences / shapes to adjust to those points automatically. Is that possible at all or am I waaay out there?

(in case that wasn't clear, lets say you build a sequence where a moving head goes from front left of floor to front right, making a rectangle around the dance floor. But at each venue the size of the rectangle changes, and the orientation / placement / angle of the trussing/trees may change too.)

Also: Is there any way to program multiple moving heads to focus on a single point? If you use them as a spotlight, but they are seperated by a big distance, we can't just send the same pan/tilts to each light or their beams will be parallel instead of intersecting wherever the person is on stage.
