Using the SHAPE tool for scanners

I'm having real problems getting the shape tool to work. I've watched the tutorial video, which is great up to the point where the guy clicks the OFF button to make the scanner start to move. When I click the OFF button nothing happens at all, it stays OFF.
I've tried using other fixture definitions with PAN/TILT, I've made sure I've highlighted the fixture. I can control the fixture manually using by dragging the spot on the grid, and by writing sequences for it, but trying to use the SHAPE tool, just doesn't work.
Has anyone got any ideas, I'm tearing my hair out on this one
