I made a 8x8 dmx led matrix, i control it by using the freestyler suntrix plugin.

You need a dmx multi exhanger, and than you connect one led to each channel (64 times )

i can do that, but there's a much easier and cheaper way.
only one problem that's the way I still don't know. XD

This is a neat way of doing this.. I tried to look up Multi Exchangers, but i cant find any in the US.

im also quite interested in this project. i can't afford a multi-exchanger £200. but i can afford another arduino mega £25.
52 outputs of which 14 can provide PWM. the outputs can v.easily be expanded 16 extra outputs for as little as 54p using a port expander.

store sequences in its eprom so can work without dmx.
it doesn't have to be dmx, stick an Ethernet module on it, or control via usb we could write external software (or have raph modify a version of ledtrix) so that we don't need to use any dmx channels.

EDIT:
The shift bright leds every one is using look awsome $4.99 each.
a standard arduino (less pins and programing memory,but cheaper) can control 120 of these at 25fps
arduinos can be linked together.

i think the way Mattotone is the simplest way to do it. But I really don't know where to start that project
