One year ago (actually on new years night) I used something similar but yet somewhat less dangerous.
I used 2 Co2 blasters controlled on DMX with FreeStyler.

Something like this:

But then from the ground straight up left and right on the stage. Put a light on the right place and it can have a nice effect as if it was fire. Only colder.
A lot of people startled when I used them for the first time (at prime time of the party) as it is pretty noisy and a very unexpected effect.
I controlled the left and right blaster seperatly with 2 override buttons in FS.

Excellent! I used to do a similar thaing with Martin / Jem Club smoke system, not as good as that though!.
Co2 is a brilliant effect

Yep! welcome to smoke free Britan. Rubbish. There are 2 types of smoke / fire detector. One detects acuall smoke and the other detects heat. If you are in a venue with the latter then get you fogger / hazer out!!! There is no way to tell which you are dealing with without taking it down for examination

The other alternative is to buy a cracked oil hazer. This is the type of thing they use in TV studios. It puts out micro particals that the light beams pick out.
It looks like there is haze in the room but in 'normal' light it seems well normal (no haze).

These units are normally big and expensive as is the fluid they use (compared to waterbased hazers).
Also they can leave a slippery film of other kit, which can be a problem.

I tend to use waterbased haze where I can.

If you are using actual cracked oil haze then you should not be able to set off fire alarms ever!
Thats why its used in theatre and tv studios. They have smoke detectors, not heat (for obvious reasons) so the use of something like real fog or haze is not possible.

Ive read that before and it does make some interesting points.
DMX can by nature control pretty much any device that needs an 'on' or 'off' state. Ive even seen DMX amplified celling speakers where the signal would contol the volume and source! You could easily make dmx control pyros, motors to lift / move trussing or stage sets, just about anything!

I think its best left to the control of lighting and fog machines.
