Accidentally. Yeah, right.

I do my job in 2 different places. Both places disable their smoke alarm in the main lounge because of this issue.
Otherwise, the alarms will go off everytime. Not just when I am there...
Moving >800 people outside is not their hobby.
Next to that the fire-brigade is alarmed automaticly in those places. You don't want that guys to come for nothing over and over again. Especially not in the middle of the night in between drunk visitors.

So maybe that is possible also at other places you go, Onge?
I'm not really into smoke alarms but I can imaging that almost all larger places have think of something like this?

Venues never understand how much of a difference light haze can make to a performance. I always try and push to get someone who know whats they're doing to zone out the fire alarm, but it always comes back at 'NO'... very annoying!

I sometimes wonder if it is worth all the effort of setting them up if you cant use smoke!?!!

Indeed, never had that though. But if I have I think this would be my way of work:

Before the show/party starts, make sure the fire alarm goes of more than 5 times. After that, they will shut it down. ;)

You are right ofcourse. Its their place, they make the rules. As long as the people were the party is for understand that it is not your fault you can't smoke, but someone elses.
