Simple Buttons For Static Cues

Post by BeefofAges »

I've got two moving head fixtures in my basement bar that I've got running in Freestyler but I'm not sure how to accomplish what I'm trying to do because all of the wikis and related details are about putting together full shows with multiple steps/sequences/cues and my goals are a bit different.

Specifically, I'd like to have a simple button to click to move the lights from their power on reset state to a specific static place and color, and another button that sets a specific value on the DMX channel on each fixture that puts the fixture into sound activated mode. With these two buttons, I want to be able to be able to toggle back and forth between the static setting and the sound activated setting.

Using Freestyler (4.1.7 if it matters) I can move the fixtures, set colors, gobo, all the things. When I've got it set where I want it, I can save the single step sequence and load it onto a button, but I have to press and hold the button to get the fixtures to move to that setting, and when I stop pressing the button the fixtures return to their previous position instead of staying in the static spot where that sequence specifies.

For the sound activated mode, I can set that using the settings on the top right when the fixtures are selected, but I'm not sure how to save that as a sequence that I can map to a button. Even if I can do that, I fear it will have the same issue as the other button for the static single step sequence and not stay in that mode once I stop pressing the button.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing some sort of basic setting or understanding but all of my tinkering hasn't resulted in the outcomes I'm looking for. Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated. :)

" ... load it onto a button" - I assume you mean the Programmable Override buttons. Right click on the button and see if the Flash Button option is checked. If so, uncheck it.

Also, in the Sequence Editor, under options, make sure that Clear Channel Values When Closed and Restore Values When Closed are NOT checked.

Another possibility, in Freestyler Setup see if the Cue, "Go to previous value" always enabled" is checked. If so, try unchecking that option.

Ah cool, thanks. It was the Restore Values When Closed that was hosing me up there.

Any thoughts about how to achieve the second objective? On my fixtures (Rockville Rock Beam DC) I can send a value between 201-255 on channel 11 for each of them to put them into sound activated mode which is automated in the firmware of the fixture and ignores all the other DMX settings. I'd like to have a Programmable Override button for that as well so I can switch back and forth between the static mode and sound activated mode.

I'm guessing I could manually edit the chs file that was generated for the Static button I have working now, but the structure of that sequence of comma delimited values isn't intuitive (to me at least, heh) past the fixture file and channel count definitions. Is that the right way to think about accomplishing this or does the values set in the right side slider window also get saved as part of the step in a sequence?

EDIT: I think I got it figured out, actually. The values in the right slider bar are in fact captured when the step is saved. Thanks again for the assist!
