Ambilight

Post by reg »

Hi Guys,

This is a feature request that might be a bit off the wall sounding, but could be great for work in clubs these days. I saw an ad for Phillips Ambilight, and thought it would be great if FS could do something like this!
Ambilight basically takes the video, cuts it up into sections, and then generates a colour light that is the closest match (im sure there is some greater complexity, but thats the basics).

Where could I use it? I have a large projector system with LED bars and LED cans all around it. If these could follow the screen ouptut that would be amazing!

First of all there needs to be some kind of hardware connection so that FreeStyler can see the video.
Thats were it all starts, but most probably is also the biggest task. (as there are many ways to distribute video (composite, component, hdmi,...)
Its not just a "let us implement communications to/from a video grabber card"... Since there are many ways to do that, and many ways that should be taken into account, thats a bloody lot of work I guess.
When that 'little' step is taken, the task is 'easy'. Just look at the pixture at some lets say 25 or 50 Hz and calculate average colors per section.
Then map those values to configured RGB fixtures.
Sounds easy. And it is actually. But its a lot of work.
I'm just wondering what it will do to your CPU usage.

It could be a plugin doing all this, so in theory anybody can make this.

If it uses the Generic Windows Capture method, It should be able to work with any video input.
