At the Time i'm working on some custom midi interfaces to control freestyler. Midi works here in both directions, one for reading the buttons and sliders, the other for lighing LEDs and moving sliders thru motorfaders.
Some Midi functions are giving back some values for lightning LEDs or so. Others not but it would be helpful:
The 20 Submaster Play Functions: It is possible, when the Submaster is in Play state, to light up a LED (send value 127). Disabling with Submaster Stop. When the Submaster have its blue background => LED lights up at play midi channel
The TAB SYNC Function: LED on Tab Midi channel lights when the blue light in the Cue Window lights up.
Here is a pic of the testinterface with TWI interface for 3 submasters.

Looks nice i also have been thinking to make my owne midi controller.
I have been thinking about the Livid Brain, Or MidiBOX.
instead i'm using 3x Bcf2000.
I totaly agree that the buttons also needs to be updated.
you can make a Feature request on the Bug tracker.
