Any suggestions on a pro lighting desk?

Post by LJ_krede.dk »

Hey Guys.

the "lyd & lys" group ("sound & Light) i'm doing volunteering work for is thinking about buying a pro lighting desk. We will still use freestyler for some oof our jobs but we want to have a pro desk so we can write that on our resume (the professional lighting industry hasn't discovered Freestyler......yet). I know some of you have tried a lot of desks (I think it was Onge who have experience with some desks?), so maybe you can help me?

When we are doing stage light, we have:
  • 16 Eurolite ML-Spots on 4 Powerbars (ussally we use two powerbars as front light)
  • 4 PAR64 (long) on two bars on a dimmer
  • 4 PAR64 floorspots on a dimmer
  • 2 Eurolite LED bar 324/10
  • we also have 2-4 scanner we are considering to use for backlight
  • We also have 3 Futurelight MH-640 Wash light we can use in the front
  • and more to come when we have some money for it (maybe LED Parcans and/or LED bars)

when we make disco light for the big parties we have
  • 6 Martin PAL 1200 FX (or more, we have 10 in total which is working)
  • 16 Eurolite ML-Spots on 4 Powerbars
  • 4 PAR64 (long) on two bars on a dimmer
  • 4 PAR64 floorspots on a dimmer
  • 2 Eurolite LED bar 324/10
you can see some video's of the common setup at youtube:

we were thinking about a avolites Pearl (tiger) or a chamsys wing. any suggestions is appreciated

A Tiger is a great choice. I use a Zero 88 Leap Frog 48 which I love. Its easier to use than Avolites stuff and cheaper and does all the same stuff.
It have 2 universe and more over artnet.
You can probably pick one up new for about £1200. Flightcase avalible from flightcasewarehouse website for about £200 I think.
Freestyler DMX - Pissing over the competition since 199x

in denmark a leap frog 48 cost about 35.000 DKK (4.229,26 GBP) as new. i have seen a demo model for 20.000 DKK (2.416,72 GBP)

I can see the leapfrog 48 has submaster faders. is it the same like freestyler or is it just a playback fader for one sequence like the pearl?

I used the SGM Studio 24 scan control a lot.
Also I played something around with the Avolites Pearl tiger desk and SGM Pilot 2000.
Now, de SGM Pilot 2000 is just a piece of a toy - so that is out of my recommendation.
Worked once or twice with the Avolites Pearl tiger, did'nt have enough time to get the hangs of it. Missed easy access to flash buttons. (could be because I did'nt have time to find that out). So I can't tell you how good this console is. Because of that, I preferred FreeStyler above the Avolites Pearl tiger.
But I did worked a lot with the SGM Studio 24 scan control. I found it a very nice console to work with. Easy programming, lots of pre defined shapes and easy to intervene live.
The studio 24 scan control has a smaller little brother, the studio 12 scan control. Which is the same, but smaller and somewhat cheaper. But big enough for what you want.
