Question from a Newby

Post by Madatack »

Hii Guys,

I'm new to this and I'm organising a party in may and wanna show the guys from light and sound how it should look and move, and maybe even insert it into there system (is that possible with magicQ table?).

So I downloaded Freestyler and magic 3D view, looking nice..I insert fixtures...ok so far so good... i tried to insert some movement, i select the moving head to folow the 8 shape, i press ON and the little blue ball doesnt move... never...no matter what i do and try.

I open Magic 3D .. insert same fixture ( i think , 99% sure I do ) , put light on in freestyler , but i see nothing... if i change colors in freestyler...nothing shows in 3D... still movement doesnt work either..and NO black out is not ON...

What am i doing wrong?..

thanks allready...

That is not a bug. The Blue ball is not moving in Freestyler when the shape is on, but it its still changing the PAN and TILT channels for the DMX output.

Make sure that:
1) you have selected a interface in Setup --> FreeStyler Setup --> Interface Setup --> Controller
* If you don't have an interface, select the "virtual Interface"
** If you don't select any interfaces, Freestyler wont send out DMX and you cant see anything in Magic3D

2) you have open magic3D by the "3D" icon in Freestyler. Otherwise the Magic3D wont receive DMX from Freestyler.

ok Thanks...workz like a charm.. now the only problem i have is that when i change something in freestyler... MAgic 3D goes to the background... how can i stay on watching the 3D visualiser while changing colors and gobos at the same time?..

also when i watch freestyler dmx tutorial on youtube given by a young Dutch guy, his blue ball DOES change place when giving it a route..

Thanks in advantage..

you can set the Magic3D window to "always on top" by pressing this button:
Magic3D-Menubar.png
...or you can go to "view --> Alwyays on top"

That was in a earlier version. In the latest versions the blue ball don't move. There was some issues so the movement was deactivated by the programmer.

ok thanks...

So i'm playing around now.. I understand how freestyler works... or 'should' work... cuzz, when I add fixtures in freestyler & I insert them into magic 3D .. I often experience problems... for example... i insert 4 martin macs 250... in Magic 3 D ... 2 lights randomly start working...1 jumps from red to green and changes gobo's randomly... another 1 does the same but with other colors .. 3th one doesn't do anything..and the 1th one listens to color's and gobo's I choose but if i Tell it to go in 8 shape it makes 1/2 circle and back... any shape or path i choose... it stays on making that same half circle.. also Blackout NEVER works...

I'm working with windows 7 true vmware fusion on a MAC... maybe that's the problem? or are my fixtures not right?

I m just using fixtures that exist allready in the program at the moment...first wanna get the hang of iet before making the show with my own material...

thanks for the help and sorry the many questions..

i would suggest you try with another fixture. There's a lot of different mac250's (different types and modes) and you have to be sure you have selected exactly the same fixture in the exactly same mode in freestyler and magic3d. for example: if you use one kind of 250 in FS which use 14 channels and another one in Magic3D using 16 channels, you get some strange results when trying to control the fixtures. also some fixture attributes may be on different channels. I think this is your problem. try to check name, number of channels and which address each fixture have both in freestyler and magic3d

Regarding shapes. selecting a 8-shape doesn't mean your Moving heads will make a 8-shaped movement. Try to read this topic: Beizer shapes looks wierd and a wierd "!"

Onge gives a very good description how the xy plot and shapes works for moving heads.
