Controlling Freestyler with iPad and iPad 2

Post by movalwebmaster »

So ive found a really cool way to control Freestyler from your mobile device such as iPad, iPad 2, and any other mobile touch pad device.

assuming you have your rig set up, powered on and freestyler running on your computer/laptop.
STEP 1:
Windows has a built in feature called remote desktop, you can access it by going to:
Windows Vista/7: Start>Control Panel>System>Remote Settings>Allow Connections.... (not remote assistance)
Select the user you want to have access to the system, and you should be done.
**if you are running a firewall, make sure you allow Remote Desktop access
STEP 2:
Next you will want to give your system a static ip, if you already have one skip this step, for those who dont you need to know your network settings. To do so, launch command prompt then type: ipconfig
it will read something like this (the actual ip will be different from this but same structure):
IPv4: 192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
**Write down what ever your systems info may be, it will be needed. Now to make the change:
Windows Vista/7: Start>Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center>Manage Connections
Right click the adapter you are using for an internet connection (some people have multiple NICs, but is not needed) then go to properties. You will want to change your Internet Protocol Version 4, so click it then click properties. The info you wrote down earlier will be needed for this part. Uncheck automatically get ip and instead click: Use the following ip address:
put in the info you wrote down earlier, for the second half asking about dns, click use the following DNS....put in your default gateway address here. Click OK, then OK again, and now you should have a static ip address. What this does is ensures your computers ip address never changes so once you configure a mobile device to connect it will always work as long as you stay in the same network.Image
Step 3:
Here comes the fun part, in freestyler 3.4.6 go to Setup>Freestyler Setup>External Control>Touch Screen.
Click Enable touchscreen view, Select touchscreen: 1 . Uncheck hide keypad and touchscreen userinterface 2
then click enable, a new window will pop up, in the upper left corner just click minimize, then save and your out of freestyler setup.Image
STEP 4:
On your mobile device you will want to install a remote desktop client software from either the android market or Apple APP Store. Currently im using an RDP LITE which is free on an iPad 2. I will walk through this app, others will use somewhat the same setup. Once you have installed the software launch it, tap add another server, then new. Type in the ip address of your system running freestyler (the one we configured earlier) Then put in the username and password for the system. once done tap connect then the system ip or name you just created. If done correctly you should see your computers/systems desktop. maxamize the screen you minimized earlier after setting up the touchscreen and BAM you have an awesome remote that allows you easy to push cues, gobos and so much more, for extra control just minimized the software and youll be in freestyler on your mobile as if you were at your desktop.ImageImage

hopefully i explained this well enough, and your well on your way to showing off your lighting skills. if you want to see some of the fun things ive done go check the "show us your shows portion of the forums"

unfortunately not, remote desktop is only included in the Professional, Business, or Ultimate versions of Windows. Home editions do not have remote desktop.
however if you install real vnc server for free and the vnc client on your tablet. it will give you the same result.
