Mac OS Support

Post by magic »

I know it sounds crazy, but like many I threw away all my windows notebooks and changed to a Macbook Pro.

Dj'ing now works like a charm, and I have stability as never seen before with my windows notebooks.

But unfortunately, there is no support for Freestyler in Mac os.....

Is there no other way than installing windows xp on bootcamp or on vmware to get freestyler working??? Hint hint hint???
And how is freestyler running in vmware????

Just dreamin.... But secretly a bit hoping.

Yeah I know,

But there is some good news.
I installed VMWARE Fusion with a Win Xp setup.
At first boot Fs launch resulted in a Blue screen of death.
After installing all of the windows updates Fs works like a charm on my brandnew Macbook Pro!!

So yes, it is possible to run FS on a Mac.

I really do not notice any difference in performance. Dmx output works at full speed with no glitches.

Dmx output is really as fast as before on my windows notebook.... perhaps even better.... My Macbook pro is a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, my old notebook was a Amd Turion x2 tl-50.

Tomorrow is the big day, Freestyler will run a full event the whole day...... let's see what this does.

Test succesfull!!

Freestyler runned for 8 hours without any lockups, dropouts or errors!

So Freestyler + vmware Fusion + a Mac really works!!

Pfffff..... Now I can sleep well again.......

traktor & emulation are both resource intensive tasks. the fact that you can run FS on xp inside osx is damn impressive! another resource heavy app on top of that might be pushing your luck.

Just to come back in and add my experience:

I set up VMWare Fusion with Windows XP in OS X on a late 2007 Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz with 2gb of ram. I ran Freestyler on it with a Enttec DMX Pro dongle.

On OS X I was also running Traktor 3, iChat, and Safari at the same time.

I am now able to DJ and run lights at the same time on the same computer with no issues aside from one blue screen of death and I think that was more related to a total lack of resources as I had a ton of things running at the same time.

So, those of you on OS X... don't be afraid to try it!

p.s. here's what I'm running currently light wise:

18 Stallion LED Par Cans (Cheaplights.com) in a 3x6 matrix
4 Chauvet Colorpalettes
2 Chauvet Min Spots
1 Chauvet Scorpion Storm RG

Maybe you can use Crossover for mac.
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/

It runs windows programs directly under Mac.

Having some trouble with configuring freestyler on a brand new MacBook Pro. When I had freestyler on a windows machine, my DMX-USB interface was available as an option (Gus electronics), but with the mac version posted above it is no longer an option. Does anyone know how I can add my converter to the collection of interfaces in the freestyler program?

You need to map the USB to dmx adapter to the virtual machine. Go to the settings and select USB devices.

I just installed Freestyler on my macbook Air. I would guess that you already know about parallels desktop. But for those who don't it's a software that runs a copy of windows on a mac in it's own window. The only real downside I've found is that you have to buy a copy of windows to install on the mac.
So far I've just tested one fixture and so far so good. Seems much more stable.
Anyway just adding my 2 cents- Of course I wish there was a mac version though.

Using VMware/Parralels is quite expensive (+ windows license). For those who would like to virtualize, consider Virtualbox. It's open-source, free and working like a charm!
