Request: MIDI control of Submasters

Post by george_w »

Hello all.

My first post on this forum, and it's a feature request right away! :D

I found out that the submasters can be controlled remotely by MIDI to some degree, but I'd like to have more control.

My request: could FS support a command like this:

Submaster ##, "select and run"
it would be assigned to a specific control change, and the value of the control change would determine the specific cue which needs to be selected and started, right away.
(therefore, 128 cues could be selected right away within one submaster)

A couple of examples:
Channel 16, CC 1 is assigned to submaster 1
so, CH 16, CC 1, value 10 would select, and run cue 10 of submaster 1
so, CH 16, CC 1, value 5 would select, and run cue 5 of submaster 1

This would eliminate the need for various GO / BACK / RUN calls, and it would simplify the task of creating a "light controlling" midi track.

(needless to say: :fs: !!)

hmmm, wouldn't it be better and easier to configure the MIDI controller if it was different CC# in stead of the values?

20 submasters, having 20 possible sequences each, it would require 400 control changes.

Since Freestyler only supports 1 midi channel, there are only 127 contol changes and (theoretically) you would run out of options, if you'd like to control all sequences in all submaster groups.

Please hear me out, the reason I'm requesting this feature is this.

Suppose you have a "color" submaster group 1 containing the following sequences:

1: red
2: green
3: yellow
4: blue
5: orange

and the midi input mapping is like this:

Submaster 1 back: Control change 1
Submaster 1 go: Control change 2
Submaster 1 run: Control change 3

(and the requested command: Submaster 1 select and run: Control change 4)

At the start of my midi song, I want the color blue to be selected and to be run.

Now, if I would create a midi "pre programmed" light control track, using the the existing submaster commands, I would have to do the following:

Submaster 1 back, Control change 1, value 127
Submaster 1 back, Control change 1, value 127
Submaster 1 back, Control change 1, value 127
Submaster 1 back, Control change 1, value 127

(to cancel out any possible previous selection from a previous song....)

Submaster 1 go, Control change 2, value 127
Submaster 1 go, Control change 2, value 127
Submaster 1 go, Control change 2, value 127
(.... so I end up with blue at this point).

Submaster 1 run, Control change 3, value 127

Using the new style command, which I'm requesting I could do a simple:

Submaster group 1, select 4 and run, Control change 4, value 4

I realize, that there can be 20 sequences withing one submaster. So, you could also divide the 127 possible values in 20 equally sized chunks. Then you could also use a fader, to select the desired sequence, but that's another possible solution for my request).

By the way: I noticed that I've probably posted this question in the wrong section. Can it possibly be moved to the "Ideas and Remarks" section?
