Make your own DMX Controller & Wireless DMX

Check out some of the DIY projects over at http://diylightanimation.com/.

I just finished making my second DMX Controller. I'm currently doing a co-op for 4 x wireless DMX modules that can be set as RX or TX.
Yes this is a Christmas Light focused group, but some very good stuff for DMX stuff. And you might even get into the Christmas spirit and have a blast making light shows at Christmas time.

You can't beat a DMX controller for $60 that functions just as good as any thing out there on the market.
Let me know if you all have any questions.

Hi,

I always wondered though that if you used wireless DMX there is a chance you could get it picking up weird signals causing your interface to send it to your lights and they then have a mind of there own? Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

The only way around it I would have if you paid thousands for your own frequency?

If you go with a Wifi Based wireless dmx, then no you should not have interference as long as you lock down your wireless network with WPA2 Security.

I have tried a similar configuration using wireless dmx tx/rx devices with the dmx source being an art-net dongle (DMX King - eDMX1). Somehow there is interference that causes all the light fixtures to reset momentarily about every 60 seconds. This doesn't happen when I use the wireless dmx with a hard dmx controller as the source. I believe this is because the 2.4ghz dmx transmitter is using the same frequency as the wireless router that the art-net dongle is attached to. It may just be the particular brands of wireless dmx and art-net dongle, I am using. It could even be the dmx fixtures. I have noticed that a couple fixtures tend to reset themselves even when no wireless DMX is in use and may be sending a signal down the line that either the art-net device or the wireless dmx reacts to. Perhaps it is a reaction to static electricity that the hard controller can handle, but the art-net cannot. There is not much documentation on the wireless dmx devices, but it says they automatically search through 26 channels, so I also wonder if they happen to be cycling through and hitting the frequency that interferes with the wireless router on a regular interval.

What I have figured out is that I can use art-net via a wireless router or the wireless dmx devices, but not both.

If anyone has an idea about how to stop the problem (interference issue) I am having, please let me know.

Hey all , I too asked this question and it was solved, this is my device

IP DMX DX 433Mhz, transmits/receives standard DMX512 Protocol data transfer wirelessly, which allows you to transfer data between the controller and the luminous devices without a cable connection.
the DMX512 source can be any remote, the device itself, etc. transmits all 512 dmx channels

the ability to connect multiple devices to one receiver
the device can work as transmitter and receiver

1.The transmitter power of 100mW (20 dBm)
2.Clean glad.signal 433MHz or 868MHz
3.The receive sensitivity -121 dBm
4.The +12V power supply
5.The radius of 120 meters
6.The possibility of installation in the device
7.The possibility of installing an outdoor antenna (SMA connector) increase glad. action

successful test drive 100 rgs led = 300 channels

If you can't preselect the channel on the dmx wireless hardware then have you tried a different channel assignment on your router? You can usually log in to it and select one specific channel, or sometimes even reduce the width of the band that channel is occupying.
Another option if your laptop wifi/drivers allow is to conduct a 'site survey' to see which channels are more or less congested than others.

Hey not sure if anyone is following this post yet but i need a schematic where i can design a DMX controller that can also be controlled wirelessly but gives the output using a 3 pin DMX cable. The micro controller requirement is PIC anyone can be used but 28 pin is preference
thanks
