Setting Up and using a Korg Nano as a Midi controler for FS

Post by Kings »

PART 1. Connecting and Setting Up the Nano (in this case a nano Key 2)

Connect the Nano Key 2 to your computer via the USB cable and the drivers should automatically install, otherwise you can find the drivers here (under Support & Downloads/Drivers):

http://www.korg.com/nanoseries2

Go to the Korg site and download the latest version of the ‘Kontrol Editor’ software (Under Support & Downloads/Software):

http://www.korg.com/nanoseries2

This software will allow you to change the properties of the Nano, in particular it will allow all the keys to generate a midi value of 127 when pressed (Freestyler does not recognise midi values less than 127).

Unzip and install the Kontrol Editor software. You may need to disconnect the Nano First.

Connect the Nano via USB and launch the Kontrol editor software.

Select your hardware.

Select ‘Keyboard’ and Change the values to ‘0’, ‘Const’ and ‘127’ (this will ensure all key presses result in a midi value of 127) and save these values on your computer somewhere.

Now click on the ‘Communication’ tab and click ‘Write Scene Data’. This will update the firmware of the Nano itself with the new settings.

PART 2. Setting up Freestyler For The Nano

Start-up FS and open the Setup window, Click on External Control and then Midi Control.

Make sure you have selected the Nano in the two boxes at the top of the screen (See image below)

Image

Click the start button.

Click on the edit button if it isn’t already selected as per the image.

Put your cursor in the note box next to the attribute that you want activated by one of the midi keys (in this example I have chosen Toggle Blackout). Now push the key that you want to use on the midi keyboard. The figure 127 should appear in the bottom left of the screen and a number appear next to your selected attribute (in this example the key on the midi has generated the note 49, other keys will produce different note values).

Continue to assign midi keys to your chosen attributes (for overrides, assign a midi key to the ‘Overide Button 1’ect)

Push the Save button. Do NOT push the Stop button.

FS will now remember the values.

Thanks for your post. But have to say that in FSDMX x2 v.3.5.8. MIDI controlling with nanoKEY2 is like a bug - doesn't work at all! Checked twice and downgrade to v.3.5.2.

If you've found a bug within something, then can you please fill this out and submit it. Thanks

There is an issue with the midi side if have used other midi software on the PC before. Have you tried a different controller all together to make sure that your that your PC is sending and receiving midi messages? If a different controller still doesn't work then you may need to remove all midi software and start from scratch again. I have had this issues with my laptop. Removing all midi control software and then removing and reinstall freestyler X2 after restart helped.

Nope...Nano Key2 no longer works with FS.

I tried uninstalling and re installing both the Korg and FS software but no luck. FS 'sees' the midi values change but just doesn't respond. I plugged in my old Edirol midi keyboard and FS is responding well?

I'm having the same issue with the NanoPad2 after running the Kontrol Editor Software. The box does say 127 when I press a MIDI button, but the software doesn't respond. I've also updated the Korg driver and onboard software. No change. Is this a bug or am doing something wrong?
