Touchscreens are great... Until a fly lands on the close btn

Post by remco_k »

... thats possible.

For work I've been testing some touchscreens. Took one with me to the local radio station studio to test it out there. Going to play with FreeStyler also one of these days.
We've bought an IIyama T2250 MTS widescreen touch screen, it has the newest (and as far as I'm concerned the most best responsive ever) optical touchscreen technique (here's how that works). Next to that it is multitouch (only Windows 7, otherwise singletouch). Its working just great. Way better than any other touchscreen I've ever worked with.

But ofcourse there is a but...
1st: The touchscreen keeps on working when you turn off the monitor as the touchscreen components get their power from the USB bus... Not a big problem, but something you should have in mind when cleaning the screen when you THINK its off...
2nd: The touch screen is soooo sensitive, that it responds to a little fly landing on your screen and walking around on it. Using this screen with critical applications (as we do at the local radio station), the fly could easily stop the current playout task when it does not like the music. Or in the case I saw last night: it almost closed the application down by landing on the file menu and walked down to close. If the fly took off at that moment, it would have closed the app. Fortunately it walked out of the menu and flew away. No harm left behind. That can also occur when the screen is off (see my first point above).

So, I waited around to get a little movie of the fly on the panel. You can clearly see the mouse pointer moving along with the fly. And no, I did'nt do that... Its the fly controlling the mouse pointer.
See this small movie:

So let this be a little warning: be carefull using optical touch screens in critical applications. They work really perfectly. In fact, they work too good. :D

Btw; The fly is dead now.

Well, in fact I did think about it. The moment I discovered it was an optical touchscreen and it responds to very little object, I'd have to make sure it does or does not.

Since our studio is a pretty warm object on the inside, flies are quite common there in the summertime. So it was just a matter of time...
